CaribbeanTales adds new film to ‘Queer Caribbean’ Showcase

ariana_post_card_6 CaribbeanTales has added Ariana, directed by Shashi Balooja, to the Queer Caribbean Film Showcase – 6:30 p.m. on September 14, at the Harbourfront Centre. The film portrays the difficultly Dr. Abbas Imad and Abbas’ lover Karl face after Grandma Ariana erratic behavior proves not to be what it seems. Please see revised scheduling below. September 14 Closing Night: 2:30 p.m. – Shorts (free): Healing Power of Jamaica – Kalmplex, Jamaica, 5 mins. Queer Caribbean Short Film Showcase 6:30 p.m. – Shorts (free): Ariana – Shashi Balooja, Antigua, 2004, 27 mins. Dr Abbas Imad completes his residency and joins a hectic group practice. He dreams of paying off his debts and making his live-in grandmother comfortable. His well planned future starts to shatter after his lover moves in and they have to deal with Grandma Ariana’s difficult behavior. Hoping this will pass Abbas throws himself into his work believing things will work them-selves out. Ultimately, Ariana’s dementia proves to be the real issue at hand, and Karl ends up in the role of care-giver. Abbas has to come to terms with his denial, a stressful practice, his relationship, which is about to end, and the harsh reality that the loving woman who raised him no longer exists. Real Talk – Mizz Jinnay, Trinidad & Tobago, 5 mins. 7 p.m. – Feature ($20): Elliot Loves – Gary Terracino, (Dominican Republic/USA) 2012, 95 mins. (Canadian Premiere) A delightful romantic comedy about a young boy’s transition from island life with his mother to finding romance in the Big Apple.
